Ms. Hinson has been teaching Theatre Arts at Dripping Springs Middle School since the theatre arts program began. She has watched the program grow to include over 600 students and is thrilled to see so many young actors take the stage.

Course Descriptions:

 

Introduction to Theatre Arts:

 

This is an introductory theatre course. Over the year we explore and develop the basics of theatre, including building an ensemble, movement & pantomime, what is expected of an actor, using the voice, musical theater, staging, auditioning, improvisation, monologues and duet acting scenes, script writing, memorization, introduction to safe stage combat (if maturity and classroom climate allow) and audience & theatre etiquette. This course provides the opportunity students to get a taste of the theatre world and explore their own creativity. Additionally students will be required to attend one theatrical performance per school year. Textbook:  Exploring Theatre (Glencoe)

 

Advanced Theatre Arts:

 

Students in the Advanced Theater Arts Class must have taken Introduction to Theatre as a prerequisite.  This class will require that students work in all areas of theatre arts including basic stage movement, voice, pantomime, improvisation, audition techniques, what is expected of an actor, role preparation, choral reading, script writing, performance, theatre history, technical theatre, musical theatre, and readers theatre. Students will perform monologues and duet acting scenes.  All students are required to participate in Project Runway on stage at the end of the year. Theatre Production:

 

Students in the Theatre Production Class must have taken Introduction to Theatre and Advanced Theatre or audition for a spot in the class.  The focus of this class is production.  Students will use all the techniques and tools they have learned to audition, direct, and stage shows.  This is the UIL One Act Play Preparation class.  All students must participate in the UIL OAP performance. Additionally students will be required to attend two theatrical performances per school year. Textbook:  Exploring Theatre (Glencoe)

 

Technical Theatre (6th, 7th & 8th grades):

 

This class will require that students work in all areas of technical theatre including set building, light & sound design, graphic promotional material design, prop building, behind the scenes production roles, house management, terminology and theatre slang, performance preparation, renderings, cue writing, costume design, media, stage management, and stage direction. Students will design elements for various theatrical productions. Additionally, all students will be required to attend one theatrical performance per school year.  Textbook:  Exploring Theatre (Glencoe)
